Oakfield Stud Farm

This customer wanted us to build a covered walkway between the house and the stable block that would look integrated and at the same time attend to the dilapidated roof on the stables. It was decided to use 6" green oak posts and beams for the walkway from the house and along the front of the stable block.

The posts were anchored by 20mm treaded bar, cemented into the concrete base. The posts and beams were braced with mortise and tenoned gallows brackets held by oak pegs. The post bases were given chamfered oak skirts.

The facing stable wall was covered by deep waney edge oak boarding and the ceiling of the walkway by 100mm pine tongue & groove.

The roof construction was traditional with rafters with bird's mouth notches sitting on the cross beam plate and running up to a ridgeboard and supported on purlins. Boarding, roof felt and battens were added, and then the whole was roofed with Grade 1 Western Cedar shingles. This natural, light and attractive form of roofing that will last 30 to 40 years.
